How will you keep active during the festive season?Cancer Council has warned Queenslanders to keep up their healthy regimes over the festive season, as statistics reveal one in 10 deaths in Australia are linked to not maintaining an active lifestyle.
Australia ranked 94 out of 131 countries for being physically active, according to Global Observatory for Physical Activity, with less than half the population maintaining a physically active lifestyle.
Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said Christmas was a time to plan for a healthy holiday period.
“For many of us, Christmas is a time to de-stress, have fun and relax with friends and family, which can often lead to overeating and an unhealthy holiday from regular exercise,” Ms Clift said.
“Being physically active and ensuring a healthy diet every day, including during the festive season, reduces the risk of a range of chronic diseases, including some cancers.”
Ms Clift said a game of backyard cricket or a swim to beat the heat were good ways to keep active.
“Keep up your physical activity regime during the holidays, too. It’s recommended all Queenslanders get moving on most, if not all, days of the week for optimum health,” Ms Clift said.
“Remember to stay hydrated by drinking lots of water, especially with the hot weather predicted for Queensland, and stay SunSmart when outdoors and the UV Index level is three or above.
“It’s also important to encourage your friends and family to make healthy choices the easiest choices this festive season.”
