Wotif Travel Specialist Kim Stockham said the Gold Coast was a favourite family destination all year, with the festive period no exception.
“The Gold Coast is an enduring favourite for families and travellers, and plenty of Aussies will be arriving at the Gold Coast to start their summer holidays with family and friends this Christmas Eve and Christmas Day,” she said.
“Many travellers are heading north, with Melbournites and Sydneysiders arriving in droves to the Sunshine State.”
Wotif released its top 10 popular Australian airports this week, with the Gold Coast airport ranked third over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, behind Sydney and Melbourne (Tullamarine), with the Queensland capital coming in fourth.
The research was based on the amount of arrival and departures booked through Australian airports.
Gold Coast Airport chief operating officer Marion Charlton said extra capacity had been added over the Christmas and New Year period to cater for the influx of passengers expected to travel through Gold Coast airport.
“The Christmas holiday period is traditionally the busiest time of year for most airports, and as the premier tourist destination in Australia, Gold Coast Airport is no exception,” Ms Charlton said.
“Gold Coast Airport is anticipating a record December with a 7.9 per cent increase in flights in and out of the Gold Coast when compared to December 2014.”
