Decision time: Gold Coast Titans outside back James Roberts is on the verge of picking a new team. Photo: Brendan EspositoThe race to sign James Roberts is down to two clubs after St George Illawarra were told he would not be joining the Dragons next season.
Roberts is now to decide if his future remains in Queensland with Brisbane or if he should make a return to his junior club South Sydney.
Fairfax Media understands that the Roberts camp rang the Dragons on Tuesday to inform them he would not be taking up their contract offer.
This comes as Roberts’ uncle and advisor Jeremy Donovan met with South Sydney coach Michael Maguire and chief executive John Lee on Saturday with the Rabbitohs hatching a plan to have Roberts at the forefront of their community work.
Roberts is expected to make a decision before Christmas, and join his new club when pre-season training resumes in the new year.
He has enjoyed living out of the Sydney spotlight on the Gold Coast and may opt to replace Justin Hodges’ as Broncos centre.
The prospect of a homecoming at South Sydney also excites the 22-year-old, Roberts, a La Perouse United junior, played 10 top grade games for the Rabbitohs before joining the Panthers.
His two year stint at the Gold Coast ended when his initials were forged on a contract.
