After a string of box office busts, Johnny Depp has been named Hollywood’s most overpaid actor.
The Pirates of the Carribean star topped the Forbes list which looks at the earnings of actors and compares it to how well their last three films fared at the box office.
Depp, 52, was paid $US30 million in 2015 despite producing a series of box office turkeys. Mortdecai made just $US47 million worldwide, failing to recoup its $US60 million production budget.
According to Forbes, the actor returned just $1.20 for every $1 he was paid. This is an abysmal amount compared to Hollywood’s best bang for buck actor Chris Evans, who returned an average of $181 for every $1 he was paid.
Depp now finds himself in the same company as Adam Sandler, who Forbes has named as Hollywood’s most overpaid actor for the past two years.
While Depp’s career has been on the rocks for some time, the list of most overpaid actors is a surprising mix of both in-demand and washed-up stars.
Denzel Washington placed second, returning only $6.50 for every dollar paid. Funnyman Will Ferrell placed third, followed by Liam Neeson, Will Smith, Christian Bale, Channing Tatum, Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck and Tom Cruise.
Forbes conceded the result of actors such as Liam Neeson, who returned big in Taken 3, was brought down by flops such as Run All Night.
The same can be said for Ben Affleck, who returned only $12.50 for every dollar he was paid after his 2013 flop with Justin Timberlake Runner Runner made just $US19 million with a $US30 million production budget.
The most overpaid actors list stands in stark contrast with Forbes’ ‘best actors for the buck’ 2015 list, of which four of the top five are women.
As aforementioned, Captain America’s Chris Evans is the best tinseltown investment, returning a staggering $181.80 for every dollar he is paid.
Mila Kunis placed second and is the best bang for buck actress, returning $87.30 for every dollar.
Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Emma Stone, Chris Hemsworth, Vin Diesel, Jennifer Lawrence, Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson rounded out the list.
While the results may come as a win for women in Hollywood, it says more for the industry’s well-publicised gender pay disparity, where women are paid considerably less than their male co-stars.
