TOP SALE: Darren Cameron, Koonik Dohne stud, Victoria; Greg McCann, Macquarie Dohne stud, New South Wales; Don Mills, Kardinia Dohne stud, NSW; Fiona Cameron, Koonik; Craig Robertson, Havelock Park Dohne stud, Vic; Bill Mildren, Wodonga, Vic; and John Nadin, Macquarie stud, with the $12,000 top-price ram at the 2012 Premier Dohne Sire Sale on Tuesday last week.A GOOD crowd returned for the second Premier Dohne Sire Sale at Adelaide Showground on Tuesday last week.
The top price did not quite reach last year’s height of $21,000 but a top of $12,000 was well-received, along with the second highest price of $10,000.
There was a bigger catalogue of rams than last year’s offering, with 26 offered (two were withdrawn from an original count of 28) and 17 sold averaging $4147.
The top ram was went to stud adviser Bill Mildren, Wodonga, buying on behalf of three studs – Koonik Dohne Stud, Victoria; Havelock Park Dohne, Vic; and Kardinia Dohne Stud, New South Wales. It was a Macquarie stud ram, NSW, with Lambplan figures of 0.7 millimetres eye muscle depth and fat depth of -0.1mm.
“He could be a leader in the Dohne breed in Australia because he has got all the things that we really look for in the breed – wool quality, his balance and his meat capabilities,” Mr Mildren said.
Macquarie co-principal John Nadin was happy with the price, along with the quality of rams on offer at the sale, from by 12 different vendors.
The second top price of $10,000 was paid by West Wail, Vic, for a DD Dohne ram, NSW, with 1.0mm EMD and 0.4mm FD.
Other buyers included Glen Holme stud, Manoora, with two Mollerin Rock Dohne Merino stud rams, Western Australia, at $2000 each, and Delta Group, with two DD Dohnes rams at $2000 each.
Elders Auctioneer Tom Penna said multi-vendor stud sales were selective and this year’s Premier Dohne Sire Sale was no different.
“These guys are looking for sires that can improve their flocks, so they’re looking for something a bit extra,” he said.
